A P2V air tanker drops fire retardant on the Burnside fire in Alpine County, Calif., Monday, Sept. 1, 2008. The P2V firefighting air tanker crashed on takeoff from an airfield just north of Reno, killing all three crew members on board moments after this photo. The Tahoe Daily Tribune reported:An air tanker hoping to drop retardant on a wildfire in the Sierra Nevada south of Lake Tahoe, crashed on takeoff near Reno on Monday, killing all three crew members on board. The twin-engine P2V air tanker owned by Neptune Aviation of Missoula, Mont., had been fighting a wildfire earlier in the day that had forced evacuations over the weekend in California’s Alpine County near Hope Valley south of Lake Tahoe, Reno fire spokesman Steve Frady said Monday night.
This was a sad situation, but at the time of the photograph I was simply trying not to get trapped in the fire below or get covered in the red fire retardant coming from above.
Photo 183 of this series also from this fire in California’s Hope Valley.
